Start with use; use GSM as one comparison point
GSM is grams per square metre—the mass of one square metre of fabric. It can help compare likely body, thickness, transparency and drape, but it does not prove abrasion resistance, opacity, durability, dimensional stability or quality.
- Curtains: review drape, light transmission, heading response, seam plan and lining.
- Roman blinds: add fold formation, pocket bulk, total finished weight and hardware or motor limits.
- Decorative cushions: balance handle and shape with seam behaviour, care and the intended insert.
- Seat cushions or upholstery: request the use-specific abrasion, pilling, colourfastness and seam evidence required by the project.
Pure linen and linen blends solve different briefs
Pure linen may suit a natural texture, relaxed drape and characteristic crease response. A blend may create a different softness, structure, stability or care route—but only its exact fibres, percentages, yarn, weave and finish explain why.
- Request exact composition and percentages, not “linen blend” alone.
- Confirm usable width, repeat, colour, batch availability and supplier care.
- Use current dimensional-change information for the selected article.
- Approve the physical sample and record any lining, seam or pressing constraints.

Send the intended product and environment, dimensions, quantities, preferred handle and appearance, required test evidence, construction, lining, labels or packaging, delivery location and target date.
Fabrication & specification notes
Exact numeric GSM, fibre percentages, dimensional-change results and performance claims remain pending until a current supplier sheet is attached to the selected article. Martindale and Wyzenbeek results retain their named methods and are not directly converted.

Does heavier linen mean better durability?
No. Fabric mass is not a durability or quality rating. Yarn, weave, finish, seams, care and relevant article-specific test results all affect performance.
Can one linen be used for curtains, Roman blinds and upholstery?
Only after the exact article has been reviewed for each use. These products place different demands on drape, folds, seams, light control, wear and care.
